The Pirate Bay Trial

The Pirate Bay is Sweden’s most popular website, a portal that allows users to exchange films, music, games, and other digital files. But the file-sharing system involved, Bittorrents, also opens the door to illegal downloading of copyrighted material.

February 16 sees the opening of the trial of four key people behind the Pirate Bay. Radio Sweden will be following the trial, and the Swedish Radio News Department will be broadcasting a live webcast from the courtroom.

Here is a link for those of you able to follow the Swedish to Swedish Radio's coverage of the trial including the live audio from the proceedings.

Stockholm district court threatens to fine two of the founders of the file sharing site “The Pirate Bay” if they continue operating the site – but the two men reject the accusation as untrue. According to the court, Gottfried Svartholm Warg and Fredrik Neij are still involved in the internationally known site and should they continue to do so will they be fined nearly $US 70,000 each.

Pirate Bay Trial Delayed

The Supreme Court has ruled to defer the main proceedings in the Pirate Bay case. After it was decided that the court will try two of the appointed judges in the case for conflict of interest the time plan has become to narrow.

As the Supreme Court may take some time deliberating, a new date for the proceedings has not been set.

“It is certain it can’t be before the New Year, but when in 2010 it will begin is hard to say, “Judge Ulrika Ihrfelt told Swedish News Agency TT.

Bias Charge Given Another Chance
Photo: Marc Femenia

Lawyers representing the Pirate Bay have won a partial victory in their battle.

They want to get two judges who turned down their recent appeal declared biased. This angle has already failed once, but now the Pirate Bay legal team have got the go ahead to try once again to get their claims of bias recognised. This would then open the way for another appeal against the original verdict.

Sweden's new anti-file sharing law took a major blow on Tuesday when the Svea Court of Appeal ruled that internet provider Ephone does not have to hand over details of its web users to companies who suspect that illegal file sharing has taken place.
