The drawing in the newspaper “Nerikes Allehanda” a week ago reflected a controversial artist’s vision of the prophet’s head on the body of a dog to decorate a traffic circle. There were protests during the weekend in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Egypt.
Around 200 Moslems demonstrated against the cartoon outside the newspaper’s offices in Örebro Friday. Meanwhile, a group of Moslems in Sweden has organized a crisis group, trying to defuse the tensions. The organization told Swedish Television News it will provide correct information about the issue to media and embassies from the Arabic-speaking world.
In an editorial Saturday, the leading Swedish newspaper “Dagens Nyheter” said Sweden should not apologize for the drawings, and the country has a duty to defend its principles and open dialog.
