Retail Tariff Negotiations Collapsed

The risk of a strike in Sweden’s retail industry during the Easter holiday is increasing after tariff negotiations between the retail union Handelsanställdas Förbund and the employer organization Svensk Handel collapsed. According to the head of the retail union, Lars-Anders Häggström, both partners were unable to reach an agreement despite six weeks of negotiations.

Fewer Robberies due to Snow

The snowy weather in the past months has had a positive side effect when it comes to robberies. The number of shops that became victims for robberies sank by 15 percent compared with the previous winter, as figures by the Swedish National Council for Crime Prevention show.

Turkish Protest in Central Stockholm

Some 1,000 people participated in a demonstration in downtown Stockholm on Sunday condemning the decision by the parliament to call the systematic killing of up to 1.5 million Armenians by the Ottoman Empire genocide. The rally at Sergels Torg was organized by several Turkish organizations in Sweden.

Saab Restarts Production

On Monday, a new chapter in Saab’s history will be opened when the production at the plant in Trollhättan will restart after a seven-week-halt. The ailing Swedish car brand is now a part of Dutch sportscar maker Spyker, and many of the 3,500 employees at the Trollhättan plant are optimistic that Saab’s new owner will lead the company into a prosperous future.

3,000 Daily Doses of Cocaine

Tests in Stockholm’s sewage have shown that the inhabitants of Sweden’s capital consume some 3,000 doses of cocaine on a regular Saturday. The commercial TV channel TV4 carried out the measuring at a wastewater plant on a weekend in January this year.

Nordic skiing world cup

In the final event of this year’s women's Nordic skiing world cup Marit Björgen of Norway won the 10-kilometer handicap race in Falun (Sweden) on Sunday. Overall world cup champion Justyna Kowalczyk of Poland finished second. Sweden's Charlotte Kalla came in the cross-country race – making her eighth in the overall ranking.

Paralympics
First Swedish Medal

Sweden’s wheelchair curling team has won the country’s first medal at the ongoing Paralympics in Vancouver. After beating the USA 7-5 in the bronze medal match, the Swedes had at least some one to cheer. The success was overshadowed by doping accusations against skip Glenn Ikonen who was suspended before the match – following a random drug test which detected a beta blocker in his body.
